Behind every performance is a dedicated team working together to bring each production to life. Chester-le-Street Theatre Group is run by a passionate committee of volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to keep the group thriving. From organising productions and managing memberships to coordinating rehearsals and supporting our performers, they play a vital role in everything we do.

Alongside our committee, we’re proud to have a talented network of directors, choreographers, musical leaders and backstage creatives who help shape each show. Together, they ensure every production meets the high standards our audiences have come to expect. But what truly makes our team special is the sense of community behind it. Many of our members have been part of the group for years, building lasting friendships and sharing a love of theatre that continues to inspire new generations.

Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or supporting from the audience, everyone contributes to the success of Chester-le-Street Theatre Group and we wouldn’t be the same without them.

Julie Dryden-Smith – President

A founder member of Chester-le-Street Theatre Group, Julie Dryden-Smith has been at the heart of the organisation since its very first production in 1982.

Over the decades, Julie has played a pivotal role in shaping the group into the thriving, award-winning community it is today. Her passion for theatre and commitment to nurturing talent have inspired generations of members, from juniors taking their first steps on stage to experienced performers delivering standout productions.

Julie directed numerous productions, including award-winning shows such as The Beautiful Game, and continues to champion high standards while maintaining the welcoming, family spirit the group is known for.

Beyond the stage, her dedication extends into the wider community, where she also serves as Centre Manager at Chester-le-Street Community Centre — the home of the group.

Her three words to describe the theatre group: family, pride and passion perfectly capture not only the spirit of the organisation, but the legacy we strive to continue building.

Bill Stephenson – Honorary Life President

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Bill Stephenson, our honorary life president and founding force behind Chester-le-Street Theatre Group. As a longtime director and passionate supporter, Bill dedicated many years to building and guiding this group in its early days. His commitment laid the foundation for the vibrant community we enjoy today. Though no longer actively involved, Bill’s legacy lives on in every production, every performance, and every member who steps on stage.
